Finding the balance between conservation and development in Nigeria

Finding the balance between conservation and development in Nigeria

April 26, 2017

TFT’s Gerome Tokpa and his team have supported Biase Plantations Limited (BPL) in Nigeria, a supplier of the biggest palm oil company in the world, to improve relations with local communities. This began by setting up a social team to lead engagement with those communities – dedicated community liaison officers were then hired from a range of communities. With TFT’s support, they led the discussion on the Free, Prior and Informed (FPIC) consent process. Today the local people know far more about BPL, who built a new road for the community.  BPL will also support local farmers with good agricultural practices to help increase their crop yields. From the initial 2,367.45 ha of Calaro Extension, BPL has left 35.31% for communities and conservation purpose.
