Pulp and Paper
How we work with APP on Pulp & Paper
As one of the companies who sources materials to produce their products from nature, APP has undergone enormous pressure from NGOs, media and key customers against their past practices in forest management. They have been accused of deforestation of peat/natural forests, harming biodiversity and its habitats, disturbing the people living within and surrounding their operation areas.
In 2011, APP approached TFT and commenced several dialogues, in which both parties conveyed their concerns; TFT with its mission to protect the environment, to respect people’s rights and to support business growth. After several dialogues with key stakeholders, including Greenpeace, TFT has since supported APP in one of the most ambitious commitments ever made in forestry history.
TFT officially engaged with APP in early 2012 , which marked the first milestone of TFT’s journey with APP. TFT carried out an early diagnostic study to understand APP’s supply chain and its complexity on the ground. From that study and by listening to the key stakeholders, TFT and APP came up with an action plan to tackle the complex issues associated with forestry in their operation in Indonesia. This included traceability, deforestation, peat management, social conflict resolution, transparency, stakeholders engagement, wood supply, mills operation; and to promote sustainable practices.
The result has been tangible. On 5 Feb 2013, APP announced a permanent end to natural forest clearance across its entire supply chain that covers 2.6 million hectares of forest concessions, through the introduction of its Forest Conservation Policy (FCP). The moratorium on forest clearance in all APP’s suppliers has proven to be effective. Moreover, APP’s commitment has been extended on further improving environmental performance, biodiversity conservation and protection of community rights through Responsible Fibre Procurement and Processing Policy (RFPPP).
