How we work with Grupo Palmas on palm oil
In March 2017, TFT and Grupo Palmas launched a partnership to work toward the responsible production of palm for people and the environment in Peru. TFT’s support for Grupo Palmas follows TFT’s Values, Transparency, Transformation, Verification (VTTV) approach, and it includes the following key activities:
Policy Development and Implementation (Values): TFT advised Grupo Palmas during the development of the company’s Sustainability Policy and the communication of the policy to stakeholders.
Engagement with stakeholders (Transparency): TFT supports Grupo Palmas as the company works to increase transparency via improved communication with stakeholders. This work includes advising on the development of a sustainability dashboard, grievance mechanism, and external communications.
Work with Smallholders (Transformation): TFT and Grupo Palmas are collaborating to ensure that any expansion of palm oil production with independent suppliers in the Tocache Valley, as well as in the future in areas where the company has a presence, is done responsibly. The work with smallholders will receive the technical support and advice from TFT’s Rurality program. Rurality works to engage and empower farmers and communities through value-creation activities, sustainable agricultural practices, and improved livelihoods.
Landscapes (Transformation): TFT and Grupo Palmas will work to promote protection of forest and resilient, thriving communities at Maniti/Santa Cecilia.
During the first year of partnership (March 2017-March 2018), Grupo Palmas and TFT seek to develop meaningful metrics and systems for the monitoring (verification) of these commitments. Grupo Palmas has committed to publishing two public progress updates annually to report on the implementation of its Sustainability Policy for palm oil.
