How we work with Maisons Du Monde on Wood
In 2010, Maisons du Monde (MdM) created a new role within their organisation for someone to oversee the social and environmental impacts of their products. This led to the partnership of MdM and TFT. Since then, we have been working with MdM toward more responsibility within their supply chains. It was sometimes an easy path, sometimes a painful way but all this time, we always talked frankly to try to solve the problems that may appear on the way.
At the start of the partnership the main focus was to gain supply chain transparency and visibility of the wood species in order to understand where improvements needed to be made. The second step is now to also assess the Health and Safety conditions at the factories level.
Since then, various programs have been launched in parallel to support community forests projects in India and Indonesia. Two emblematic wood species in the MdM’s furniture (Mango and Sheesham)have been identified and MdM decided to support the farmers planting in India Sheesham trees, at the boudaries of their fields. The aim of these programs is to train local farmers to create clear and responsible supply chains that support local communities. By sharing skills and knowledge on best practices, the farmers are getting more from their resources and are able to connect to the international market.
Planting Sheesham Seedlings in India
The Sheesham trees are planted around the field in India and not in forests. In order to distribute 20,000 seedlings, we need to convince a great number of farmers and explain to them the advantages of this wood species and how to plant it. Our four foresters on the ground are working daily with farmers, to train them and to share with them the best practice on the Sheesham harvesting.

Member's Work Plan
In the coming month, the goal for MdM is to increase the number of references with responsible wood (The goal is to reach at least 60% of the references with responsible wood in 2017 – Part of this responsible wood will be the sheesham wood, coming from the agroforesty projects in India).
During 2016, we will also increase in India the number of suppliers checked with social approach (Health and Safety + Social conditions at the factories level).
As MdM has different products including Leather, we will start a study on the issues with the leather and try to connect MdM’s suppliers with responsible leather sources, especially in Brazil.
One of the other goal is also to give a better visibility on the work done on the ground by promoting the QR codes on the products and on the MdM’s website.
MdM launched its first CSR report in 2015 (link). This report gives a complete overview of the situation at Maisons du Monde for all the environmental issues on their products. MdM also issued some movies on the projects and work in India. Click to view a short video.
