Many of us enjoy chocolate, but do we know where it comes from? Or how it was produced?

The chocolate journey starts in cocoa fields. Cocoa beans come from pods which  grow on cocoa trees. These pods are grown in South America, Asia and Africa. It is Africa which is by far the biggest cocoa producer – or to be more specific, West Africa, which is responsible for around 60% of the global production, with Ivory Coast producing nearly 40%, followed by Ghana with 20%.

Around 95% of cocoa is produced by smallholders farmers. They are facing many challenges, including poor crop productivity and difficulty in improving their livelihood. Cocoa is also often associated with child labour and deforestation, but at TFT, we believe it is possible to produce cocoa that creates value for those who produce it, respects people and the environment.
